Pilates is ‘Corrective Exercise’
“Sports are wonderful for the constitution generally,” Joseph Pilates states in Cutting a Fine Figure, Reader’s Digest, October 1934, “but they are of little value for correcting what’s wrong with you – and there’s something wrong with almost everyone. ‘Corrective Exercise’ (Pilates) is the only way to build a beautiful, strong, youthful body."

Terri Josephson - I have loved movement all my adult life. I developed a bad lower back due to teaching aerobic exercise for 15 plus years. In addition, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 1997. I started Pilates training in 1996, not because of my back, but because in my fitness trainings and readings I kept hearing about it. Pilates seemed to be the next 'big thing' to come down the fitness pike and I wanted to be part of it. To my surprise my back stopped hurting me about 6 weeks into my training. That's not the 'miracle'. Movement is hard with RA. There are days its hard to get out of bed never mind teach exercise. The miracle is, there's always a few Pilates movements that I can do that don't hurt, so I do them. That loosens my joints, so I hurt less, then I can do more. Will I ever be able to do the full repertoire of Pilates movements? Probably not, too much damage has been done to my joints from the RA. I do what I can. Pilates has given me my body back, actually, Pilates has given me my life back. Don't wait to change your life, start now!
Cathy Hoke - I started taking Pilates at another studio after a car accident left me with a damaged hip and daily pain. I felt that Pilates could be what I needed to get my life back. I was taking private sessions there when I heard about The Pilates Sanctuary from friends and decided to give them a try. After entering the studio, the ambiance drew me in. I met with Terri and decided to give her a try and signed up for private sessions with her. "Now this is a horse of a different color" I thought. While the equipment is still intimidating, the arrangement, a smaller room for private sessions separate from the larger studio room, is calming and comfortable. At the other studio I did Pilates exercises but I was not instructed in correct breathing or proper form, such important fundamental elements of proper Pilates. Terri monitors every position, checking my alignment, adjusting and innovating for my body challenges. Due to my damaged hip, there are exercises I can't do, but Terri finds a way.
I am not yet where I want to be but I feel mentally encouraged and physically strengthened. My apprehension and fear of re-injuring myself is a thing of the past. After 6 months with Terri, I know Pilates will be a part of my life from now on.
Anita Hemseri - I suffered for 10 years with debilitating pain from a congenital hip deformity. In early 2008 I was told by two Orthopedic Surgeons that my only option was to have surgery. I decided to seek an alternative solution. In September 2008, I started private Pilates sessions with Terri. I was amazed by the decrease in my pain, the improvement in my flexibility and gait, and the strengthening of my core. Because of Pilates, I was able to delay my total hip replacement surgery until 2013. I was able to resume my Pilates practice 3 months later. I would highly recommend Pilates to people of all ages!
Debra K.- After throwing my back out 3 times in the last year just doing simple chores, I decided to try Pilates to strengthen my core and balance my body. I am very happy with the results I have achieved working with Sonya at the Pilates Sanctuary in Englewood. I can get thru my housework and onto the fun activities without stopping to rest my back. Another big plus is that I have noticed an improvement in my acid reflux symptoms since practicing Pilates and have been able to reduce my medication. Yeah Pilates!

Margaret S age 62- When I started Pilates I had trouble walking, I had to use a cane and was very discouraged that my life was just going to get worse. I have been working with Sonya for only 4 months and people are noticing the difference in my body and I can walk with much more ease. I still need the cane but maybe not for long!
Sherrod Keane age 75 - I started Pilates sessions in 2010. I had just been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and had to stop playing tennis. Terri took me in hand and very patiently introduced Pilates to me, which turned out to be the perfect exercise/body work for me. I have a curvature of the spine also. I now do two private sessions a week and am amazed at how much my spine has improved, and how my body and abs have responded to Pilates work. My massage therapist and chiropractor have noticed the changes in my back and body, and are pleased. I love Pilates!
Betsy Tootell - I am a 58 year old triathlete and have been practicing Pilates with personal trainers for over 10 years. I started practicing Pilates to maintain and improve my flexibility and to balance out the other activities I was doing in the sport. I have spent the last 4 months in Florida preparing for 6 months of rigorous training for a 1/2 ironman.
I am fortunate to have met Terri when I first arrived in Florida. Training with Terri has been an incredibly positive experience! She has imbued her expert knowledge of anatomy/physiology through closely supervised exercises. She has helped me increase my core strength, toning, posture and flexibility, therefore allowing me to use my body more efficiently when training and competing.
Pilates with Terri has been a very efficient and comprehensive weekly workout for me. She is so professional and personable. Most impressive has been that Terri had me work very hard to maintain the correct form for each and every exercise I did!. I have been doing personal Pilates sessions for years with other trainers that did not consistently train me this way. As a result, I am now more aware of my posture and form with everything I do - even walking across a room! I will miss her when I go back home, but will think about all the many things she has taught me!
